Agreed -- judicious and modest use of Twitter's many interesting options is the smartest approach. And there's PLENTY of specious apps to pick from as this article points out, tongue in cheek.

I don't use Twitter, but I am on Facebook, and the Twitter-like feature is certainly a draw. I didn't think I'd ever update mine, but I saw updates from friends and thought they were fun to read, so now I update mine a few times a week. Other people clearly read them, too. I recently referenced my upcoming trip to NYC and several people contacted me through Facebook and said they would also be in NYC at the same time. So it's potentially a useful networking tool...

I disagree with my friend and colleague Bill. I think they’re “real.” I mean, it’s obviously a marketing stunt, but I think those are real good old fashion Americans caught in a “candid camera” bit. Here’s the behind-the-scenes word: http://www.brandflakesforbreakfast.com/2007/12/how-to-produce-whopper-freakout.html

I have heard that companies use these sites to find freelance writers. Has anyone tried this? (I am a freelance writer all a-twitter and so on.) I went on MySpace, entered "freelance writer" and found some pix of girls in their scanties. They may be writers...who knows.

Thanks for your comment and the linky love to our show Bill. I agree with you - independent podcast producers in many instances are doing the heavy lifting of going out and attracting targeted audiences to their content. Why waste time aiming for millions who won't act/buy/participate when you can reach the thousands who will?

Apparently some book titles work this way, too. I went to an author event featuring Jhumpa Lahiri last night and she came up with the title "Interpreter of Maladies" years before she wrote the collection of short stories. She ran into a friend who was working in a hospital as an interpreter for Russian immigrants and she scribbled the phrase on a piece of paper. Years later, it became the title of her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection.

John: Your last paragraph in this post is extremely well stated. I'm working on some things revolving around content and marketing, and I'd appreciate permission to quote your comment. OK with that? And can I make reference to where you work, either directly (company name), or in vague terms (a Fortune 1000 manufacturing company or what have you)? This is a first for me, posting a comment, so I hope I'm following proper protocol.

I heard that This American Life episode and was amazed at the vetting process for deciding what headlines were included in the paper. Their gut reactions to the initial read through was rough and set a very high bar. Maybe we should try that.... :)
